Superfund status for lab opposed State wants to retain cleanup control of Santa Susana field testing site By Teresa Rochester Ventura County Star (CA) January 13, 2009California Environmental Protection Agency officials announced Monday that the state opposes listing the Santa Susana Field Laboratory as a national Superfund site but reserves the right to change its position.
The move will keep control of the cleanup of the polluted rocket-engine and nuclear test site, contaminated with both chemicals and radio active constituents, in the state's hands, as mandated in state law, SB990.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had recommended that the site in the hills south of Simi Valley be tapped as a Superfund site, which would have put the cleanup of the 2,850-acre facility under federal control. The federal agency asked the state to give its opinion of the idea by this week.
