Report: BRAC savings, timing lag BNAS closure remains on schedule for 2011 By Rachel Ganong Brunswick Times Record (ME) February 3, 2009 BRUNSWICK — Costing more, getting less and taking longer.That's what a new federal report concludes about the Department of Defense's efforts to comply with 2005 Base Realignment and Closure recommendations that are triggering the closure of Brunswick Naval Air Station and other military installations throughout the country. The study reports that cost estimates to implement the 2005 BRAC recommendations have jumped by $1.2 billion to an estimated $32.4 billion and savings have shrunk by an estimated $13 million. The U.S. Government Accountability Office, which bills itself as Congress' investigative arm, reported Friday that completing BRAC actions by the mandated deadline will pose a "challenge" for the Department of Defense. The study also reports increased closure costs and decreased savings anticipated by the 2005 BRAC round. ...
