Salina Airport to Prepare 30-Year Contamination Cleanup Plan
Negotiations to get local control of project continue

As local authorities continue to negotiate a contamination cleanup 
settlement with the Army Corps of Engineers, officials at the Salina 
Airport are moving forward on the project. Airport Authority board 
members Wednesday voted to approve an agreement with the Dragun 
Corporation for the preparation of a 30-year cleanup plan.

At issue is contamination, things like solvents that have seeped into 
the ground, left behind when the Air Force vacated the the former 
Schilling Air Force Base facility back in the late 1960s. The area is 
now the Salina Airport Industrial Area.

Contamination includes both liquid and vapor.

The main concern is two large underground plumes of contamination, one 
in the north part of the Airport Industrial Area, and another on the 
south end. As of this summer the southern plume was beginning to 
encroach in a residential neighborhood, around the area of Foxboro Drive.
