Residents cite health concerns

At the conclusion of a public hearing called to update residents on a World War II-era poison-gas testing site in Azalea Park, many of the more than 300 people in attendance lined up to speak, searching for answers to their concerns.

There were questions about falling home prices as a result of the current government investigation, and worries if their own homes and yards would be tested for soil and water contamination. But mostly there was anguish over the long-term effects this bygone military facility might have on their health, and on the health of their families and their neighborhood.

Mary Lobianco’s home on Egan Drive is located at ground zero of where storage tanks were filled with mustard gas; Lewisite, a deadly arsenic compound; and other cancer-causing chemicals.
