Subject: [CPEO-MEF] REUSE: Brunswick Naval Air Station (ME) housing
Agency bidding to buy housing used by BNAS
The goal is to control the impact on the area's real estate market as the Navy base closes down.

The agency that's overseeing redevelopment of the soon-to-be-closed Brunswick Naval Air Station wants to buy some of the base's housing stock.

The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority put in a bid for 702 housing units owned by a company that provides base housing in a program with the Navy. Balfour Beatty Communities owns the homes on land that is leased from the Navy.

Steve Levesque, the authority's executive director, said his agency wants some control over what's done with the housing and is concerned that a private buyer could end up depressing rents or housing values in the area.

"The uncontrolled allocation of those housing units in the marketplace will have a detrimental effect on housing values in the community," Levesque said. "We want to manage the disposition of it."
