Officials seek solutions to Cheyenne water contamination By JARED MILLER Casper Star-Tribune (WY) April 17, 2009CHEYENNE -- State and federal officials today will discuss strategies to help eliminate traces of a toxic industrial solvent that seeped into a key source of Cheyenne drinking water. The city shut down one of its municipal wells in December after tests revealed elevated levels of trichloroethylene, or TCE, which is a non-flammable solvent used from the 1960s to the '80s to remove oil and grease from metal parts. The sources of the contamination is believed to be an abandoned nuclear missile site near Cheyenne, where the military dumped the chemical into open pits during Cold War training exercises, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. ...
