Sit-down with El Mirage over Luke still up in air for cities Cecilia Chan The Arizona Republic May 5, 2009A month after El Mirage Mayor Fred Waterman formally asked his peers to the table to find economic solutions for his landlocked city, it's up in the air if the meeting will take place. The proposed sit-down came after El Mirage was criticized by West Valley leaders for going to Washington, D.C., to ask for help, including $400 million in federal compensation to help offset its development restrictions imposed to protect Luke Air Force Base against encroachment. El Mirage's move was seen as a threat to the military base's efforts to land the next generation of fighter jets, the F-35s, which would secure the installation's future. Peoria Mayor Bob Barrett remained steadfast that he will not meet with Waterman until El Mirage states when and where it has requested help from Peoria. Barrett took exception to Waterman publicly stating he was rebuffed in his request for help from neighboring communities. Barrett also wanted El Mirage to retract an economic impact report it commissioned to base its request for federal compensation. ...
