Council Sticks With Schroeder Hall Plan

After listening to more than an hour of pro and con, the City Council 
took the pragmatic route Tuesday night regarding an application to take 
over the Army Reserve site on Willow Street and add a mental health 
facility for homeless people nearby.

Fifth District Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, whose district includes the 
Schroeder Hall Army Reserve center, requested the debate. She has been 
the primary target of nearby residents and a neighborhood activist group 
opposed to the addition of a Mental Health America (MHA) site next to 
the city’s Health Department headquarters.

Tuesday, supporters of rights for the homeless and mental health 
advocates packed the council chambers, overflowing into the lobby.
