Deadline is today for comments on Presidio plan

Today marks the end of the public comment period on land use changes 
proposed for the Main Post of San Francisco's Presidio - a deadline that 
may sound bureaucratic but in fact signals the next round in an 
acrimonious battle unlikely to end anytime soon.

The changes, if eventually approved by the Presidio Trust, would clear 
the way for Gap founder Donald Fisher and his family to build a museum 
for their contemporary art collection. There'd be room for a hotel and a 
multiplex cinema, along with extensive archaeological excavations and a 
landscaped green replacing a large parking lot.

The unveiling of the proposed museum design in January 2008 unleashed 
criticism of how the Main Post is being treated by the trust, an 
autonomous agency that manages most of the 1,491-acre national park at 
the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge.
