Micmacs acquire land in Limestone

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The Aroostook Band of Micmacs will use newly 
acquired property in Limestone to spark economic development and sustain 
some of the tribe's own economic resources.

Richard Dyer, who has served as the Micmac tribe's housing director for 
eight years, said Tuesday that the band recently completed a deal 
through which it will own a 13 million-gallon oil tank farm, a coal 
handling facility, several large buildings and 619 acres of mixed hard 
and soft wood land on property that was part of the former Loring Air 
Force Base in Limestone.

The band has about 1,000 members living mainly on tribal lands in 
various locations in eastern Aroostook County.

Dyer said that after the base closed, interested parties were allowed to 
request portions or parcels of the more than 9,000-acre base. He said 
Tuesday that the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs submitted a proposal 
on behalf of the Micmacs. Dyer and the Micmacs would not reveal the cost 
of their acquisition.
