North Chicago wants FBI firing range closed

NORTH CHICAGO -- Mayor Leon Rockingham is protesting the re-opening of 
the FBI firing range on the city's lakefront.

Rockingham said he first heard shots in the middle of his workday at 
City Hall -- more than a mile from the small firearms training facility 
-- in mid-May. The sound of gunfire was the first inkling that he, Foss 
Park district employees and nearby residents had that the range, which 
was temporarily closed in April 2008, is being used again.

The FBI closed the range after 41 bullets were retrieved in adjacent 
Foss Park and along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The environmental group 
Blue Eco, which filed suit in January 2008 in an attempt to close the 
range on the grounds that it is contaminating nearby land and water, is 
appealing a U.S. District Court ruling that it failed to prove 
sufficient harm to keep the case in court.

Rockingham, who has written a letter of protest to the U.S. Department 
of Justice, said he came away from a hearing before the 7th Circuit 
Court of Appeals with the impression the range would remain closed until 
the court ruled on the matter.
