Shaw's waste discussed at meeting By ANNABELLE ROBERTSON Sumter Item (SC) June 10, 2009The state Department of Health and Environmental Control held a public meeting on Monday evening to discuss a proposed permit renewal for Shaw Air Force Base. The meeting, held at Oakland Elementary School and hosted by DHEC, described the regulation of corrective activities for the base, which are the subject of the permit. The 10-year permit will expire on July 9. DHEC is proposing that it be renewed for another 10 years. According to Rachel L. Donica Poole, an associate engineer with DHEC, after the base opened in 1941 to train cadets to fly in combat during World War II, Shaw began generating various sorts of waste that are now recognized as hazardous. These included both fuel waste (jet fuel, diesel and gasoline) and solvent waste, which came from the maintenance of aircraft, support vehicles, buildings and structures on base. ...
