Contamination cleanup ordered at Swannanoa site

Environmental officials are investigating soil contamination discovered 
on state-owned property once used by the U.S. Army for a crematorium in 
Swannanoa next to Owen High School.

Asbestos and toxic chemicals leaking from old transformers were found in 
a wooded area to the northwest of the school on property owned by the 
N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice.

The state Division of Waste Management has ordered the department to 
fence in the area to keep the public out and hire a consultant for 
development of plan to clean up the mess.

It's unknown at this point whether the contamination has spread off the 
site, whether anyone has been sickened from exposure to the 
polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, found leaking from the transformers 
or who dumped the waste, said Jaime Kritzer, spokesman for the 
Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
