New GM test facility at YPG opens BY JOYCE LOBECK YUMA SUN (AZ) July 22, 2009YUMA PROVING GROUND - Pulling up to the newly completed General Motors test complex for the grand opening Wednesday morning, it was clear this was Chevrolet country. ...The GM Desert Proving was developed on 2,400 acres inside Yuma Proving Ground about 30 miles north of Yuma through an enhanced joint use lease agreement between the automaker and the Army. The new test facility replaces GM's 50-year-old complex in Mesa where urban encroachment had brought two-story homes to the very edge of the test courses. Through the agreement, the automaker is assured protection from urban encroachment and gets to use YPG's dirt test courses; the military gets to use GM's courses to test its equipment and will be getting its own paved track paid for by GM (money that was deposited when the agreement was inked in 2006). Construction on the new GM test complex, built at a cost of about $100 million, began in late 2007. GM employees moved down from Mesa this spring and by May 18 the new test facility became operational just in time for the busy season for hot weather testing, said Frank West, site manager. ...
