3 solutions eyed for pollution west of Cheyenne

Casper Star Tribune (WY)
July 29, 2009

The Army Corps of Engineers has developed three possible solutions for a 10-mile-long underground plume of solvent that leaked from an abandoned missile site west of Cheyenne.

The options were outlined at a Tuesday meeting.

One calls for building a new treatment system at a city water plant. Another involves building the treatment system and drilling wells to extract the solvent, known as TCE, which breaks down when exposed to sunlight. Once the water is clean, it would be reinjected into the ground.

The third option calls for the treatment system and wells along with cleaning up the missile site by pumping out the solvent or destroying it in place with microbes or a chemical compound.
