Navy vows to work toward cleaning Grumman plume BY MICHAEL WHITE Riverhead News-Review (NY) August 7, 2009Though Navy officials may feel a plume of contaminated groundwater near the former fighter jet plant in Calverton doesn't pose a threat to human health and safety, they also say they are intent on restoring the land -- and its water -- to the way they found it in the 1950s. And they say they're not leaving the Riverhead area until the pollution left behind by the Northrop Grumman weapons plant is completely cleaned. Those assurances came from U.S. Navy spokesman Jim Brantley after a meeting Thursday night in Calverton, at which officials from the state, county and Navy discussed ongoing monitoring and remedial efforts at and near the plant, which closed in 1996. "As long as it takes," Mr. Brantley pledged, reiterating the Navy's goal, as stated at the meeting, of restoring all groundwater in the area to acceptable New York State drinking water standards. ....
