Ocean County, military to split Plumsted land cost By KIRK MOORE Asbury Park Press (NJ) August 12, 2009Ocean County and the Department of Defense will split the $980,000 purchase cost for more than 200 acres of land near the Fort Dix perimeter and Long Swamp Road in Plumsted, county Freeholder Director John C. Bartlett Jr. said Wednesday. The purchase of two parcels - 121 acres owned by Albert N. Vera of Tuckerton for $280,000 and 99 acres owned by 53 Green Street LLC of New York City for $700,000 - is part of a continued joint effort by the county and the military to head off future conflicts between military missions and civilian land use. "The purchase helps to minimize future encroachments to base operations," Freeholder John P. Kelly said in a prepared statement. The county and the Navy have been actively cooperating over the past two years to acquire open space around Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station, in preparation for a big expected increase in flight operations there. In October three military facilities will be merged as Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, and bring in an influx of additional aircraft from the Willow Grove Navy Reserve air station in Pennsylvania and other facilities that are being downsized. ...
