Residents seek answers about chemical hazards from old bombing range Rich McKay Orlando Sentinel (FL) August 25, 2009Residents who live on or near a former World War II-era bombing range want to know when the Army Corps of Engineers will tell them what chemical hazards might be lurking in their ground and water. "As a member of this community, I want to know if I'm safe cutting the grass in my yard," Aida Gonzalez said during a meeting the Corps held Tuesday night in southeast Orlando. "I want to be satisfied that there are no chemicals in the water or in the soil. We haven't heard that." ...Since July 2007, the Corps has spent more than $10 million and has removed more than 400 live bombs, rockets and grenades from the former Pinecastle Jeep Range off Lee Vista Boulevard. The 12,483-acre site was used in the 1940s to train bombardiers. ...
