|Subject:||[CPEO-MEF] REUSE: Stratford Army Engine Plant (CT)|
Settlement near in airport, engine plant suits By Richard Weizel Connecticut Post August 30, 2009STRATFORD -- While Sikorsky Memorial Airport and the former Army engine plant stand across Main Street from each other, the town has no say in a complex four-party deal about to be signed that would transfer more than an acre of property from the Army to Bridgeport to make long-awaited runway upgrades and clear the way for a major economic development project at the former factory.
The agreement, already approved in principle in June by federal Judge Charles Haight, would potentially benefit both Bridgeport and Stratford by allowing addition of runway safety zones at the airport, owned by the city, and jump-starting the town's decade-long plan to generate economic revenue from the sprawling engine plant property. That could happen if Hollywood East can come up with the remaining $8.6 million it needs to finalize its bid to obtain the 78-acre property on the banks of the Housatonic River, and carry out plans for a digital media and movie production center.
