U.S. recognizes port as LRA related to base Status allows entity to receive surplus property By Fanny S. Chirinos Corpus Christi Caller Times (TX) September 22, 2009CORPUS CHRISTI - The Port of Corpus Christi has received federal recognition as a Local Redevelopment Authority. It is the second federally recognized redevelopment group in the area related to the pending closure of Naval Station Ingleside, but their purpose is not the same. A brief letter dated Sept. 18 from the Defense Department to Port Chairman Ruben Bonilla stated the port was being recognized as a redevelopment authority. A local redevelopment authority is the mechanism for taking possession of military land or personal property from the Defense Department through an economic development conveyance. The port sought recognition as a redevelopment group for the sole purpose of receiving surplus federal property. It hopes to receive office equipment and machinery no longer needed by the Navy after it departs the Ingleside base April 30. ...
