State, Kirtland AFB reach $10.5M settlement New Mexico Business Weekly September 30, 2009The New Mexico Environment Department has reached a settlement agreement with Kirtland Air Force Base that mandates $10.5 million in improvements.
The agreement with the U.S. Air Force is over hazardous waste management procedures at the Albuquerque base’s aging bulk fuel storage facility and open burn unit.
Under the agreement, Kirtland must replace the fuel storage facility and cease operations of a treatment unit that burns hazardous waste munitions. The agreement settles the Department’s assessment of fines for alleged violations, some of which were brought to light as a result of self-disclosures by Kirtland and some of which came through a July 2008 compliance inspection by the Environment Department.
