County wants say in Navy's cleanup of munitions plant near Morris Dam Los Angeles Daily News Wire Services October 7, 2009A former U.S. Navy munitions plant near Morris Dam resulted in the contamination of the soil, and Los Angeles County supervisors on Tuesday asked for a say in the military's cleanup plan. Torpedos were made and tested on a peninsula in the reservoir between 1939 to 1993. Supervisor Michael Antonovich said the Navy plans to spend $6.5 million to remove 17,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil from the site, but expects to leave 15-20 percent of the contaminates. "It is vital that a plan is developed for a 100 percent cleanup of the site to protect public health and the environment," Antonovich said. Antonovich proposed that the director of Public Health, the county forester and fire warden meet with representatives of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control and the Navy to develop a satisfactory cleanup plan for the dam. ...
