State continues negotiations with Boeing over Field Lab

In a last-minute move to keep the Santa Susana Field Laboratory cleanup on course, California officials have postponed today's scheduled deadline that would have cut off the chief property owner's option of filing a lawsuit against the state's tough cleanup standards.

State officials announced late Monday that they will extend the deadline to Feb. 15 for Boeing Co., which has been in talks with the state Department of Toxic Substances Control over a plan to remove pollution on the 2,850 acres south of Simi Valley.

State officials called the postponement an appropriate step. But a state lawmaker and some community activists contend California has come close to bungling the process of developing a cleanup plan.

Within the past two months, state officials removed the project's longtime director and, critics say, botched the public release of a draft agreement with two federal agencies that also are responsible for contaminated areas.
