Guard has explosive idea for training By George Brennan Cape Cod Times (MA) October 17, 2009CAMP EDWARDS - National Guard Master Sgt. Gary Mauk pulled a cord, tossed a small cylinder 20 yards away and turned his back. The small explosion, slightly louder than the boom of an M80 firework, startled a crowd of bystanders. That's exactly the kind of reaction the Guard wants its soldiers to experience. The Guard took a first step to reintroduce pyrotechnic hand grenades to its arsenal of training tools at the base. On Thursday, the plan was presented to the Science Advisory Council, a panel that offers guidance to environmental regulators at the Massachusetts Military Reservation. Before the briefing, Mauk provided a demonstration of the grenades - a quick flash, a loud boom and a puff of smoke. ...
