Boeing sues over Field Lab cleanup

Boeing Co., major owner of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, said Friday it has filed a federal lawsuit challenging a state law that set strict standards for the environmental cleanup of the former nuclear and rocket-engine research site near Simi Valley.

The company said Senate Bill 990 imposes "irrational and arbitrary requirements" and is pre-empted by federal laws governing cleanup at former nuclear energy sites.

California environmental regulators have been in talks with Boeing and two federal agencies responsible for parts of the 2,850-acre property. Last week, state regulators disclosed plans to require Boeing to comply with the state law.
