Jackson Park Impasse Between Navy, EPA Leads to $45,000 Fine By Christopher Dunagan Kitsap Sun November 23, 2009 BREMERTON — Amid an ongoing dispute with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Navy has agreed to consider more extensive cleanup options at the Jackson Park Housing Complex and to pay a $45,000 fine, officials say. The Navy has been investigating the extent of buried munitions at the Jackson Park Superfund site, which was operated as a major ammunition depot during World War II. The investigation identified about 75,000 buried metallic objects across the 232-acre property, according to Harry Craig, project manager for the EPA. Investigators then sampled some 12 to 13 percent of those and found only five pieces of discarded munitions. ...
