Amid an ongoing dispute with the Environmental Protection Agency, the
Navy has agreed to consider more extensive cleanup options at the
Jackson Park Housing Complex and to pay a $45,000 fine, officials say.

The Navy has been investigating the extent of buried munitions at the
Jackson Park Superfund site, which was operated as a major ammunition
depot during World War II.

The investigation identified about 75,000 buried metallic objects across
the 232-acre property, according to Harry Craig, project manager for the
EPA. Investigators then sampled some 12 to 13 percent of those and found
only five pieces of discarded munitions.
