After years of hauling away contaminated soil, trash and chemical waste, the Navy is winding up a 17-year environmental clean-up at dozens of sites inside Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Cheatham Annex.

The Navy initially began investigating environmental contamination at Naval Weapons in the 1980s, but the clean-up didn't start until 1992 when the base was designated a national priority by the EPA. Cheatham Annex was added to the list in 2001, although cleanup there has been ongoing since the 1990s.

Over time, 82 environmentally sensitive sites were identified at the Weapons Station and Cheatham Annex. Fully 43 sites have been investigated and cleaned at a cost to taxpayers of $15 million. The rest of the sites pose less risk and will be addressed during the next five years.
