Santa Susana Field Lab cleanup negotiations continue

After a year of negotiations with the state on a cleanup agreement for 
the contaminated Santa Susana Field Laboratory, two federal agencies are 
proposing a new type of agreement that would focus on investigating the 
site’s pollutants and the ways to remove them.

The U.S. Department of Energy and National Aeronautics and Space 
Administration pitched the proposal in November to the state's 
Department of Toxic Substances Control, which oversees cleanup at the 
former rocket engine and nuclear test site in the hills south of Simi 
Valley.

How the site would be cleaned up would be the subject of a separate 
agreement. It would be negotiated after the investigation of what 
pollutants are there and the feasibility of cleaning them up, officials 
with both agencies said Monday.
