WWII-era soil, water contamination under controlEngineers from Joint Base Andrews reporting successes in Brandywine cleanup efforts by Zoe Tillman Business Gazette (MD) January 21, 2010Halting the decades-long contamination of soil and groundwater from spilt chemicals at an old military storage site in Brandywine hasn't been easy, but engineers from Joint Base Andrews are calling cleanup efforts so far a success. The civil engineering squadron of the 316th Wing began cleanup efforts in the 1990s after realizing chemical spills dating back to the 1940s had spread contaminants several acres beyond the original eight-acre storage site. Engineers coordinating the cleanup say that as of January, they have removed all soil-based contamination and have halted the spread of pollutants in groundwater. ...
