Navy officials to share study of contaminants in Williamsburg reservoir

WILLIAMSBURG

Navy officials have concluded their investigation of whether pollutants 
from Camp Peary leaked into Waller Mill Reservoir and are set to share 
the findings with residents whose water comes from the lake.

Navy and Camp Peary officials announced last spring that traces of 
chemicals from an abandoned disposal site at Camp Peary might have 
leaked into the reservoir, the city of Williamsburg's primary source of 
drinking water.

Since then, the Navy has completed an environmental investigation of the 
possible contamination. The study involved collecting samples of soil, 
sediment, surface water, fish tissue and invertebrate tissue from 
various locations, according to a Navy statement released Tuesday. Those 
samples were analyzed for the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls, or 
PCBs. The study also included ecological and human health risk assessments.
