Two waterfront projects in E. Providence ready to move ahead By Alisha A. Pina Providence Journal (RI) March 9, 2010EAST PROVIDENCE - Development of 300 acres of the city's 14-mile coastline is considered a light at the end of the economic tunnel. Now at least two major projects are moving forward. Both endeavors - a $200-million mixed-used development called Village on the Waterfront and a nursing home that builders say will resemble a seaside resort hotel - are to be built on empty land south of Route 195. "Unlike most other Rhode Island communities, East Providence is well-situated to enhance its property-tax revenue by adding taxpayers - rather than tax rate increases on existing taxpayers — because of our vast undeveloped waterfront," Mayor Joseph Larisa Jr. says. "Although the 'great recession' has slowed actual development of much of it, in the years leading up to the recession, much of the waterfront was remediated and/or plans [were] made for its development." ...
