Fort Eustis officials detonate decades-old bomb By Austin Bogues Daily Press (VA) April 2, 2010NEWPORT NEWS - Officials at Fort Eustis detonated what might have been a 99-year-old bomb Thursday night after it was sighted in a construction zone. Monica Miller Rodgers, a spokeswoman for Eustis, said the shell, which had the year 1911 inscribed on it, was stable enough to be transported to a remote area of the base for detonation. The discovery of the live ammunition is not uncommon in Hampton Roads, a region with a strong military presence that has at times misplaced the weapons of war. The shell was found Thursday morning near Lee Boulevard and Calhoun Street on base. Rodgers said base officials know the area was fired upon by the now-closed Camp Wallace, where Busch Gardens is located, but didn't anticipate shells could reach the location where one was found Thursday. ...
