Panels approve Hunters Point shipyard report John Wildermuth San Francisco Chronicle June 4, 2010Plans to turn the vacant Hunters Point shipyard into a new neighborhood for 24,500 people received an important boost Thursday night when San Francisco's planning and redevelopment commissions narrowly approved the project's hotly contested environmental impact report. "This project has a long way to go, but this is a start," said Planning Commission President Ron Miguel. "And it's about time it got started." While the Redevelopment Commission approved the report unanimously, the Planning Commission split 4-3, with Christina Olague, Kathrin Moore and Hisashi Sugaya opposed. The long, contentious meeting pitted neighbor against neighbor as they argued over the future of the neighborhood.
