Amendment to assist Lejeune contamination studies

North Carolina's senators and advocates for Camp Lejeune veterans 
believe a new defense amendment will help those affected by historical 
base water contamination get the answers they need.

The Senate Armed Services Committee approved an amendment to the Senate 
Defense Authorization bill Tuesday that would require the Department of 
the Navy to assign personnel to assist the Agency for Toxic Substances 
and Disease Registry in its water studies. It would also create an index 
that would fully inventory documents related to the contamination of 
Camp Lejeune drinking water in residential areas of the base from the 
1950s to the mid-1980s.

Within 90 days of the bill's signing, according to the amendment, the 
Navy must turn over all relevant documentation to ATSDR. The amendment 
comes soon after queries from the agency related to thousands of 
water-related documents it recently learned of, but had never reviewed. 
The Navy and Marine Corps maintain that ATSDR has always had complete 
access to its records.
