Shipyard upgrades protective clothingAfter a May incident in which a worker's clothing was contaminated with a trace amount of radioactivity, Northrop Grumman implements new precautionary measures. Peter Frost Newport News Daily Press (VA) 9:16 PM EDT, July 7, 2010NEWPORT NEWS - Shipyard employees whose work involves exposure to radioactivity will be required to wear upgraded protective clothing as part of a handful of new precautionary measures adopted by Northrop Grumman Corp. The changes are the result of a detailed investigation conducted in the wake of a May incident in which a trace amount of radioactive material was found on the clothing of a worker at the Newport News shipyard, said Margaret Mitchell-Jones, a Northrop spokeswoman, in a statement. That worker, who the company would not name, was performing radiological surveys in a tank aboard the nuclear-powered USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier on May 25 when the contamination occurred, the yard said. ...
