Cleanup plans for toxic site nearly done BY Natalie Everett Santa Clarita Signal (CA) July 9, 2010A state department this month will share its cleanup plan for most of the Whittaker-Bermite property, the contaminated 1,000-acre plot of land at the center of Santa Clarita, officials said during a meeting Wednesday. Whittaker Corp., the company tasked with cleaning toxins out of the property, may soon be able to cross one of six sections of the site off of its to-do list. But the task of cleaning the former site of a munitions plant is still far from over. In late May, 241 truckloads of dirt dotted with depleted uranium were carted off to a Utah landfill. Later this month, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control will release plans for cleaning up toxic chemicals like perchlorate from the remaining five areas. ...
