El Mirage quiets down on Luke AFB noise issue

All is quiet in El Mirage as the F-35 makes its way through an 
environmental-impact review. Leaders of the northwest Valley city that 
borders Luke Air Force Base had voiced concerns with the jet's noise.

The U.S. Air Force last week chose the Glendale base as its preferred 
site to train F-35 pilots, though an environmental-impact study must be 
conducted before a final decision is made.


El Mirage ruffled Luke supporters last year when it raised concerns 
about the military's latest jet, but city leaders have gone quiet as of 
late.

The cash-strapped city of 40,000 has toned down its rhetoric and let its 
lobbyist go. Key council members who once led the contrarian views about 
Luke are no longer in office.
