Oregon proposes asbestos cleanup at Sunriver

Oregon environmental regulators today released a plan to cap soil 
contaminated with asbestos at Sunriver, the central Oregon resort on the 
site of a former Army training center that included asbestos-laden 
buildings.

The contaminated soil is in an uninhabited, 5.9-acre area used for 
sledding in the winter that the Sunriver Owners Association wants to 
redevelop into an aquatics and multi-use park. The Department of 
Environmental Quality's plan, open for public comment through Sept. 1, 
would cap the contaminated soil with clean soil, asphalt or concrete, 
and make it eligible for redevelopment.

Sunriver owners are voting now on an $18.9 million proposal to develop 
what's known as the amphitheater site into an aquatic center. That 
figure includes cleanup costs, the owners association says.
