As far as the eye can see, skinny trunks jut from the ground like forks in a sandbox. This conservation playground is on Fort Bragg, and there's about 93,000 acres of it. This sprawl of habitat has been monitored for years by members of the North Carolina Sandhills Conservation Partnership, comprised of environmental agencies and advocates as well as military personnel.
