Letterkenny Depot center to destroy rocket motors

Letterkenny Army Depot is moving ahead with a plan to destroy rocket 
motors containing a chemical known to cause thyroid problems.

Destruction of the rocket propellant ammonium perchlorate is to be 
contained in a large chamber so no pollutants are released to the 
environment, according to Ed Averill, director of Letterkenny Munitions 
Center. A similar technique has been tested successfully on smaller 
rocket motors at Hawthorne Army Depot, Nevada.

A $12 million facility will dispose of propellant from the outdated 
multiple launch rocket system. Construction is to begin after Oct. 1, 
2011, with operations starting after Oct. 1, 2012, and full production a 
year later, according to Averill. The project is still in the planning 
stage.
