Public voices concerns over Dublin cleanupThe Army is holding meetings about its plans to decontaminate ammunition sites. By Jeff Sturgeon Roanoke Times (VA) October 28, 2010A handful of people asked questions Tuesday at a public meeting on an environmental cleanup plan for one of two bases that make up the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, focusing on whether the plan goes far enough. ...The Army is conducting a public comment period on a $2.4 million proposal to clean up chemical contamination that has been in place since the end of World War II at the New River unit, or Dublin annex, of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. As the safety flooring in the former explosives bagging area and igniter assembly area degraded, it released lead, copper and asbestos into adjacent soil. Meanwhile, chemical residues remain in a 600-foot ravine once used to dump building debris and in a pit once used to burn excess or noncompliant explosives. ...
