Detrick signs cleanup agreement with EPA By Megan Eckstein Frederick News-Post (MD) December 18, 2010Fort Detrick signed an agreement Friday with the Department of Defense and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency outlining how to go about cleaning up Area B's groundwater contamination. U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin pushed for the Federal Facilities Agreement to be signed by Dec. 1, saying it was long overdue. Though the departments couldn't quite meet his deadline due to back-and-forth negotiations on some key points, Cardin was happy to see the agreement signed, said his spokeswoman, Sue Walitsky. The Federal Facilities Agreement is required for any federal land placed on the EPA's National Priorities List, a list of the country's most contaminated land in quick need of remediation -- and a list that Fort Detrick's Area B joined in 2008. The agreement is a legally enforceable document that sets out a timeline for remediation and identifies roles and responsibilities for each department involved. ...
