Bibb property owners in base encroachment area now in limbo By MIKE STUCKA Macon Telegraph (GA) February 21, 2011A lack of cash to buy south Bibb County properties near Robins Air Force Base is leaving dozens of property owners in limbo. Just seven of 125 properties in high-noise areas or a potential crash zone have been bought from interested owners, said Chip Cherry, president of the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce. He estimated it would take about $7 million to buy most of those properties, plus more money to remove the homes that threaten the base’s future in the event of another base realignment and closure (BRAC). But the area this year will likely see $200,000 to $500,000 in federal funds, plus another $200,000 from Macon and Bibb County, said Chan Layson, project manager for the Central Joint Development Authority, which is trying to remove the homes. The authority has created a process to buy the homes, evaluate and remove asbestos and demolish the structures. ...
