Obama to propose a BRAC-style consolidation of federal facilities

President Obama today will propose formation of a BRAC-style  
independent commission to dispose of thousands of underutilized  
federal buildings. The panel is expected to recommend consolidations  
of federal offices and relocations of employees to further reduce the  
government's space needs.

The plan is the latest effort by the administration to dispose of an  
estimated 14,000 surplus federal properties and save an estimated $15  
billion in its first three years.

Obama envisions the board - modeled after previous Base Realignment  
and Closure Commissions - to be comprised of seven public- and  
private-sector representatives whose recommendations would be decided  
on an up-or-down vote by Congress, according to an administration  
official.
