Monterey supports MST project for bus facility on Fort Ord
Councilwoman Downey flip-flops in voting in favor of writing letter

The Monterey City Council voted to support - barely - Monterey- 
Salinas Transit's 24-acre bus facility and headquarters at Fort Ord  
on Tuesday.

The council voted 3-2 to send a letter to the Monterey County Board  
of Supervisors in support of the project, but divisions on the City  
Council reflected that Monterey, like other entities involved in MST  
and the Fort Ord Reuse Authority, is "in the middle of a political  
cat fight," said City Manager Fred Meurer.

Senior planner Kimberly Cole said the city planning staff favors the  
project to help MST's plans for expanded service.

The site at Seventh Avenue and Inter-Garrison Road, she said, was  
chosen for its access to Inter-Garrison, which is viewed as a  
potential multi-use transit link between the Peninsula and Salinas.  
The transit facility would be part of a 58-acre business park on a  
former Army landfill.
