Santa Rosa looks to protect Whiting Field

The Santa Rosa County Commission is set to discuss grant applications  
totaling $400,000 to further protect the mission at Whiting Field  
Naval Air Base north of Milton.

The commission will discuss Florida Defense Infrastructure Grant  
proposals at its workshop on Monday:

-- $200,000 for acquisition of mission-sensitive property adjacent to  
Whiting Field.

"This project continues to implement the acquisition of properties  
and the development rights of properties ... to avoid incompatible  
development, prevent encroachment on the military mission, and allow  
for future use as deemed appropriate," Santa Rosa grants coordinator  
Sheila Harris wrote in a memo.
