Public quiet at Upper Cape military base cleanup hearing

A public hearing Wednesday night aimed at getting public feedback on  
the cleanup of the so-called Central Impact Area at the Massachusetts  
Military Reservation drew less than a handful of people who weren't  
attending in an official capacity.

Far from the contentious early days of the base cleanup a little more  
than a decade ago that sometimes resulted in shouting and fistfights  
at similar public meetings, Wednesday night's session turned into an  
informal discussion after a brief overview of the options that didn't  
even draw a single official public comment.

"People feel like it's being taken care of," Lynne Jennings, team  
leader for the federal Environmental Protection Agency, said of the  
apparent lack of concern in the community about the cleanup effort.  
Now that most Upper Cape residents are on public drinking water  
supplies, there are fewer worries, she said.
