Property to be used for public works site

North Charleston is poised to acquire nearly 16 acres of land that  
once was used by the Air Force.

The property, off Interstate 26 and Aviation Avenue near the  
Charleston Animal Society headquarters, is being transferred from the  
federal government without cost, as long as the city agrees to use  
the land for municipal purposes and to participate in any  
environmental cleanup.

The city's cleanup cost won't exceed $500,000, and will have to pay  
for monitoring and other testing after the site is cleared.

The 16 acres is adjacent to 37 acres the city already received from  
the federal government after the Charleston Naval Base and Shipyard  
complex closed in the 1990s.
