Little movement in SouthField debate on cleanup By Christian Schiavone Quincy Patriot Ledger (MA) September 8, 2011WEYMOUTH - The deadline for a deal to sell Navy-owned land to the developers of SouthField is approaching, but debate continues over whether the Navy is trying to shirk prior commitments to clean up the land. On one side, town councilors say the Navy has backed away from its promise to completely remove contamination from the site before turning the land over to be developed. On the other, the federal Environmental Protection Agency and members of a citizens’ watchdog group say they see no reason for concern. The Navy and South Shore Tri-Town Development Corp., the organization overseeing redevelopment of the former base, have agreed to a tentative deal to transfer about 900 acres of land for $25 million. The deadline to finalize that deal is Nov. 15. Town Councilor Brian McDonald, who first raised the issue last month, said the Navy has long promised to fully clean the base. But the Navy now says it does not plan to clean groundwater to drinking water standards at 12 acres of the site. ...
