Cleanup focuses on solvent at Beale By Ben van der Meer Marysville Appeal-Democrat (CA) September 7, 2011A plan to clean up contaminated groundwater in and around Beale Air Force Base should get under way later this year, according to officials hosting a meeting tonight on the topic. Three locations, out of 18 identified, have levels of a solvent - trichloroethylene - used at the base during World War II and the 1950s, but largely abandoned since then. "We're cleaning up things that are 60 years old," said Terry Escarda, a hazardous substances engineer with the state Department of Toxic Substances Control. "The concentrations aren't real high, but they're diffuse." Trichloroethylene, also known as TCE, is dangerous mostly if inhaled. And testing on wells near the base show levels below the minimum safe level of one part per billion, Escarda said. ...
